Visit Matera and its Sassi, a unique, exceptional city rich in history.
The exceptionality and uniqueness of Matera is the 'Sassi' district, characterised by the widespread presence of caves dug into the rock, created for the most basic survival needs, an upside-down city that enters its own belly.
The Sassi of Matera have been a Unesco World Heritage Site since 1993, a heritage considered an expression of ancient life from protohistoric Bronze Age civilisations to monastic communities, to the metropolitan marginality where one of the most impressive epics of the southern peasantry enslaved to the latifundium of this land was concentrated and consumed.
It consists of 18 caves, some of exceptional size, and a common area in an old cave church.
The entire complex is located in the oldest part of the Sassi, the Civita, overlooking the Gravina stream, facing the dramatic scenery of the Murgia Park and its rock churches.
